The Distortion of Outliers
The integrity of a study is also vulnerable to the post-hoc manipulation of data points. When researchers remove or replace observations under the guise of eliminating outliers, they often do so without a rigorous, pre-agreed justification. This practice of cleaning a data set to force a desired outcome significantly inflates the false positive rate. Without a transparent, standardized approach to identifying special cause variation, the removal of data becomes little more than a convenient way to manufacture a clean, albeit false, conclusion.

The proliferation of retracted papers and the prevalence of questionable research practices underscore a profound vulnerability in the current academic landscape. When the barrier to entry for publication is lowered, or when the pressure to produce significant results outweighs the commitment to methodological honesty, the entire system suffers. Preregistration of studies, which forces researchers to commit to their hypotheses and analytical methods before data collection begins, offers a path toward greater accountability. By accounting for all potential counterfactuals, the scientific community can begin to insulate itself against the pressures that lead to the corruption of the record.
