In this era, the physical presence of a book served as a proxy for its legitimacy. Fabrication at Scale
Today, that sense of permanence has been unsettled by the rise of the paper mill and the automated fabrication of research. The Tyranny of the Positive
Beyond the outright fraud of the paper mill lies a more insidious pressure: the demand for the significant. Academic publishing has long been governed by an unspoken preference for findings that confirm a hypothesis or demonstrate a clear effect. This creates a filter that systematically excludes the null result, effectively hiding the messy, inconclusive, or negative outcomes that are essential to a complete understanding of any field. When researchers know that only 'positive' results are likely to find a home in a journal, the incentive to curate, massage, or even distort data becomes overwhelming.
The File-Drawer Effect
This phenomenon, often described as the file-drawer problem, ensures that the published literature is a skewed reflection of reality.
